Kim Taehyung was born on 30 December 1995 in Daegu, South Korea. He is the eldest of three siblings — younger sister Kim Eun Jin and younger brother Kim Jeong Gyu. His father ran a garment store and later farmed; his mother’s name has not been publicly disclosed. The family background is simple and grounded — Taehyung grew up partly with his grandparents in Geochang, a rural area, which explains a recurring warmth and down-to-earth quality that his fans frequently point to.
He didn’t originally plan to be a singer. He came to Daegu Arts High School auditions to support a friend and ended up getting selected himself. That near-accident turned into everything.
He was cast by Big Hit Entertainment and joined BTS, debuting on 13 June 2013. In the early years he was one of the last members to be publicly revealed — Big Hit kept him hidden the longest before debut, which in hindsight only added to the anticipation. BTS went from a small agency group to the biggest boyband on the planet over the next decade.
Within BTS, Taehyung is a vocalist. His voice sits in the baritone range — lower, richer, and distinctly different from the higher tenor voices that dominate K-pop. That difference made him stand out from the first album. His stage name V was chosen because it represents “victory.”
Beyond music, he co-wrote several BTS tracks and is a trained saxophone player — he studied it in school. He has also pursued photography seriously, not just as a hobby, but with an aesthetic sensibility that earned genuine recognition separate from his fame.
His solo debut came on 8 September 2023 with the album Layover — a pop, R&B, and jazz record with six tracks. Singles Love Me Again, Rainy Days, and the title track Slow Dancing all came with music videos.
Layover debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 — tying the record for highest-ranking K-pop soloist album in Billboard history at that point. In its first week, it crossed 100 million streams, making it the third album by an Asian artist to hit that milestone. Every song on the album crossed 60 million Spotify plays — the first and only K-pop soloist album to do so as of December 2023. He also became the first solo artist to sell 2 million copies of a debut album on Hanteo Charts.
In 2023, he earned a Triple Gold certification on QQ Music China for Layover’s digital sales. Layover’s success during the same period he was preparing for military service made it one of the more remarkable album launches in recent K-pop history.
Under his real name Kim Taehyung, he appeared in the 2016–2017 KBS2 historical drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. He played Hansung — a warm, playful character in the Silla dynasty setting. The performance was well received for a debut acting role. He has not done another drama since, though his acting potential has been noted repeatedly by critics and fans. No confirmed upcoming drama project as of 2026.
Kim Eun Jin is Taehyung’s younger sister. She is not a public figure — no social media presence that has been confirmed, no public appearances. Taehyung has mentioned her in interviews but keeps her away from the spotlight. His younger brother Kim Jeong Gyu is similarly private.
Unmarried. No confirmed girlfriend as of 2026. He has been linked with various people over the years given his fame, but nothing officially confirmed. After military discharge in June 2025, no relationship announcement came. He is famously private about personal life despite being one of the most followed people on Instagram.
He enlisted on 11 December 2023 alongside BTS member RM. After five weeks of basic training, he completed three additional months at the Army General Administration School, then was deployed to the Ssangyong Unit of the 2nd Corps under the Special Task Force of the Military Police Corps — one of the tougher units, specialising in counter-terrorism and tactical operations.
During service he earned multiple commendations — the Military Police Excellence Award, the SDT Exemplary Award, and the title of Full-Arm Marksman Special Shooter. He was promoted to Sergeant First Class in March 2025 and received the designation of Special Warrior on 3 March 2025. He even responded to a genuine emergency — a stabbing incident — during duty, which earned him additional recognition.
He was officially discharged on 10 June 2025. The day his discharge photos went up on Instagram, the post crossed 13.8 million likes and 1 million shares — making him the first K-pop artist and only Asian act to have four Instagram posts with 1 million+ shares.
BTS Group: Dynamite, Butter, Boy With Luv, DNA, Spring Day, Fake Love, Blood Sweat & Tears, MIC Drop, Permission to Dance, Life Goes On
V Solo: Stigma (BTS Wings 2016), Singularity (BTS FAKE LOVE era 2018), Sweet Night (Itaewon Class OST 2020), Snow Flower (2020), Christmas Tree (Our Beloved Summer OST 2021), Layover Album tracks: Love Me Again, Rainy Days, Slow Dancing, FRI(END)S (2024), Winter Bear
Handle: @thv — 66 million+ followers on Instagram as of 2026. First K-pop artist and only Asian act to have four Instagram posts with 1 million+ shares. His posts are infrequent but massive in impact — every time he uploads, it trends. He posts personal photography, life moments, occasional musical updates. During military service he posted a discharge countdown that got 17.3 million likes.
Estimated $40 million — approximately ₹342 Crore — as of 2025–26, making him the richest member of BTS. Sources: BTS group earnings from album sales, world tours, and merchandise; solo album Layover; brand ambassadorships with Celine and Cartier; Instagram sponsored posts earning ₹70 Lakh to ₹7 Crore per post; property investment — a luxury Gangnam apartment worth over ₹38 Crore; car collection including Genesis GV80, Porsche Panamera GTS, and Lamborghini Aventador S.
In March 2025, while still in the military, he donated 200 million KRW to the Korea Red Cross for wildfire relief. He was in uniform, donating ₹12 Crore+ to disaster victims. That says something.
